Winter of Secrets

“…a bare-bones style, without literary flash, to achieve artistry as sturdy and restrained as a Shaker chair. Warmth and menace, past and present, are nicely balanced, with a denouement that’s equally plausible and startling. This confident performance is sure to win new fans to the series.” Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Siblings Wendy and Jason Wyatt-Yarmouth and their friends are in the peaceful mountain town of Trafalgar, B.C. enjoying a two-week vacation of skiing, drinking, drugs, and sex. Tragedy strikes the group of privileged students when two of the group crash through the ice into the frozen river. It’s Christmas Eve and the snowstorm of the decade has settled over the peaceful mountain town of Trafalgar, B.C. Constables Smith and Evans have a busy shift, attending fender-benders, tumbling pedestrians, and Christmas tree fires. At the stroke of midnight, they arrive at the scene of a car accident: a vehicle has gone off the snowy road into the icy river. An accident, agree police, coroner, medics. But when the autopsy reveals a shocking secret, Constable Molly Smith and Sergeant John Winters are plunged into the world of sexual predators, recreational drugs, privilege, and high-living.

Meanwhile Charlie Bassing is out of jail and looking for revenge, a handsome Mountie is giving Molly the eye, and her mother, Lucky, is cheerfully interfering in the investigation.

And all Molly Smith wants to do is ski powder.

Winter of Secrets is the third in the traditional village mystery series featuring Constable Smith, Sergeant Winters, and the town in the shadow of the glacier, Trafalgar, British Columbia.

 Reviews:

“This terrific little confection will satisfy the most demanding fans of the … genre, and makes a great gift.” Globe and Mail

“Delany creates small town characters as well as anyone writing police procedurals now. Winter of Secrets is another outstanding police procedural from Vicki Delany.” Mystery News

“Delany’s contemporary spin on this cosy style can be quite acerbic, with drugs, predators of sexual and financial persuasion and false tokens of polished affection. Winter of Secrets brings it together in the best of the Constable Smith series with an extended conclusion full of bite and, sadly, pathetic circumstances.” Hamilton Spectator.

“Delany effectively combines a cozy tone and a picturesque setting with plenty of action and procedural detail.” Booklist

“Excellent series” Mystery Lovers Bookstore

“An engaging protagonist in a unique setting.” Sherbrooke Record

“I give it a high recommendation.” Myshelf.com

Vicki Delany’s masterful descriptions of this part of B.C. urged me, once again, to pack my bags and head for the mountains. I am so glad Vicki Delany is writing a series. As with her earlier book, I have enjoyed the intimate feeling she creates and truly enjoy each and every character. I really care about the community of Trafalgar. The dry humor throughout is great, it is interesting to watch the Sergeant and Constable figure out the crimes, and the lovely descriptions in this novel made me pine for snowy, winter days. “Winter of Secrets” is another enjoyable, light, mystery novel from Vicki Delany and I highly recommend it.” Readerviews.com
